Hi Ryan,
Glad to hear from you! You can ask your teacher the question about the cell phone. You should be able to have it on weekends, I think.
You said, I wish I was home. It's natual to feel that way, especially at the beginning.
Tell us how you feel about your experience in China so far. I know your dad has taken you to some poor region of the country to visit a student your family has been sponsoring.
Just remember to observe and ask questions if you don't understand. DO NOT rush to judge whether it's GOOD or BAD. Not everything is as bad or as stupid as it looks. :-)
When you judge something or some people, you are using your own standards to measure other things or people. In fact, you may want to seek first to understand other people through your observations and thoughts.
A couple of years ago, I invited the YingHua in Beijing Summer Program students to my parents' house in Beijing. The students discovered that the elevator only stopped at the 1st floor, 4th floor, 7th floor, ..., instead of every single floor as it does in the U.S. (or in fact in many other buildings in China).
Instead of calling it retarded or stupid, we thought about it hard and finally understood that this was quite a clever design given China's economic and social situations. Can you figure out the reasons?
Most of your feelings today will be different in 5 months. So please share them with us so that other kids would learn how to prepare for a venture like yours in the future!
You may feel hard at the beginning, but there is a saying that A good beginning is half of the success.
Wish you have a great start at Limai!
