Dear Parents,

Happy Independence Day.

Sorry for the delay of this announcement. I "crashed" at 9:30 p.m. and did not wake up until 5 a.m. Rachel has her online summer job in the mornings on Thursdays and Fridays. So here is for yesterday.

Regards,
Bonnie

Hi Parents,

rnrn

rnrn

Today, while most of the students had class, Bonnie and Irntook several students to tour Beijing New Talent Academy. It was unbelievablyrnvaluable for me, as I was able to see and talk with my seventh grade homeroomrnteacher as well as “living” teacher (sheng2 huo2 lao3 shi1); I think it wasrnalso a valuable experience for the students that we brought, as they were ablernto see not only the amenities, but also were able to eat lunch there, rnexperience some of the rules (no leaving anything on your plate) and get a feelrnfor the atmosphere of the school.

Before we got back, Wang Laoshi and others taught the otherrnstudents a song that we will be singing with orphans from the Sichuanrnearthquake, called Gan2 En1 de Xin1, or Thankful Heart. The lyrics for thisrnsong, as well as Invisible Wings and Friends, are thoughtful and touching, andrnwe hope that the students will think about them as well as enjoy the chance tornsing together. Later, a teacher came in with tangrams, which the studentsrnsolved with the “90 degree” method. He also showed us a magic trick which drawsrnon the characteristics of the brain—if you hold a book above your eyes and tryrnto throw an object, you can’t catch it even though you can see the object inrnyour hand, and if you hold it below your eyes, even though you can’t see thernobject, most people could catch it.

Today was the first day that we learned kong zhu, or Chinesernyoyo. Some students struggled to get the yoyo turning, while others had somernexperience and were able to try a few tricks. For dinner, in honor of thernfourth of July and American Independence Day, Tatum and Remy’s mother decidedrnto treat all of the students and teachers to pizza. The students were veryrnthankful for this tangible reminder of home.

Student Reflections (quite impressive today!):

rnrn

rnrn

Natalie: Yesterday’s acrobats were amazing, and her favoriternwas the phoenix, with seven girls on one bike. She wondered how long it tookrnfor them to practice and become so talented. She’s grateful that the counselorrnfor 2005 organized meeting the acrobats after the show.

rnrn

rnrn

Dennis: Acrobatics amazing, especially the extremernperformances. Thankful to the teachers who arranged the whole trip.

rnrn

rnrn

Sarah: In the hutong yesterday she noticed that the peoplernliving there seemed poor and less modern, but quite happy and content, and sornshe realized that material possessions don’t always lead to greater happiness.rnMoreover, she reflected that perhaps people who had less of stuff appreciaternwhat they do have more. At the bottle painting, she continued to get used tornthings being harder than they look to make, and realized that she couldn’t takernmaterials for granted. Girls’ “fat party” brought friends together. She’srnthankful for the pizza and the people who made it possible.

rnrn

rnrn

Narendra: At first, he found that Zong Laoshi was kind ofrnscary and cranky, but now he sees how much she does for all of the students.rnInstead of being pampered like most 60 plus ladies he knows, she instead doesrnthings like buy hangers and the meat in dumplings for us, and carry it all backrnto the hotel after dinner. He thinks she’s a great guardian for the camp.

rnrn

rnrn

Evita: She was amazed by the architecture at the drum tower, rnand felt sorry for the people who had to climb it every day to play the drums.rnTangrams were a little aggravating, so she gave up, but enjoyed the Chinesernyoyo, even though she had one at home. She’s grateful to Tatum and Remy’s momrnfor the pizza, as it was the most American thing she had here and was a tasternof home. She’s still a little scared of Zong Laoshi, but admits that she’srnsuper-talented.

rnrn

rnrn

Karma: the pizza boxes were beautiful, and a weird thingrnhappened when her friends started stroking their stomachs. The acrobat show wasrnfun, especially when we got to meet the acrobats and see how hard they had tornwork. She really appreciates all the teachers sacrificing sleep and time to dornroom checks every night to make sure all the students get enough sleep.

rnrn

rnrn

Eileen: Rachel and Bonnie took her to New Talent Academyrntoday, and she was dreading it but at the same time excited. But when she went, rnshe was disappointed because the kids seemed not too happy and the food was notrngood, so she was a little depressed when she came back. But then she realizedrnthat the food was not that bad and the people were actually pretty nice, andrnshe had exaggerated things because of her negative expectations. Thanks to herrnfriends for making faces to cheer her up!

rnrn

rnrn

Tatum: She really appreciates all the things that thernteachers have done to make this program work well. Bonnie told her that Rachelrnis not getting paid, and she realized that Rachel just loves the program andrnwants everyone to have the same good experience that she did.

rnrn

rnrn

Kevin: Yesterday at the Science and Technology museum, arnChinese kid grabbed a controller out of his hand, which was really rude, andrnmade him think that Chinese kids are spoiled brats because of the one childrnpolicy.
