Bonnie Liao (Director). Bonnie is the Principal of YingHua Language School. A two-time marathon finisher and the mother of two, she has a very strong passion and dedication to Chinese education for youth. On weekdays she works as a VP in Management Science at Merrill Lynch. She founded the YingHua Language School in May 2002.

 

Colette Plum (Co-Director) Colette is a professor of Chinese history and world history at Widener University and is passionate about experiential education that links classroom learning with meaningful experience. Colette has been guiding American youth on learning adventures in China for over fifteen years, and has lived and studied extensively in China. A fluent Mandarin speaker, Colette is the Chair of the Board of Fei Yang Language and Culture Center, a non-profit committed to fostering a love for Mandarin and Chinese culture in children of all ages. She became involved with Fei Yang because she wanted to give her Chinese daughters a joyful Mandarin learning experience. Colette loves outdoor recreation and brings her love for sport and adventure to her work with children and youth in the field. Colette received her doctorate from Stanford University and used to teach in the Stanford Center in Beijing.
Jason Patent (Intercultural Consultant & Assistant Director) Jason is an intercultural consultant with over two decades of experience with China, including over seven years living in China. His work has spanned the worlds of education, for-profit business, and non-profit organizations. Jason is deeply grounded in Chinese culture through a rare combination of blue chip education, language mastery, in-country experience, and scholarly research. He is known for his uncanny ability to teach, and to find practical uses for theoretical concepts. Hanliang Pan (Co-Director). Assistant Principal of Beijing Yanjing Professional Cultural School. Ms. Pan returned to China with her family from Indonesia when she was 13 years old in 1950s. A retired chemical engineer, she volunteers most of her time and energy managing the school's business related to Chinese education to the youth born overseas. Her passion and dedication ensures the program's success.
Lingle Wang (Lead Chinese Teacher). Staff teacher of Beijing Yanjing Professional Cultural School. Ms. Wang is a retired well-liked Chinese teacher with decades of teaching experience in elementary schools. She and three other teachers who also taught Chinese in YiB 2005 Summer will again teach Chinese in YiB 2008 Summer with more experience and more effective materials.
Leina Gong (Residence Teacher). Staff employee of Beijing Yanjing Professional Cultural School. Ms. Gong is a retired school administrator. She can sing and play piano. She is also knowledgeable about Chinese medicine and traditional remedies for minor symptoms and conditions.

Shuqi Wang (Co-Director). Chairman of the Board of Beijing DDKids Culture and Art Ltd. Shuqi (aka lao3-da1) is well-known to many Chinese children for her fun and educational children's magazines and various programs in training young reporters. She is energetic and enjoys outdoor activities. Her team organizes and manages the fourth week's YiB activities with children selected from a DDKids' summer training program.
 

Seeking 4 counselors from the U.S. Applicants must be graduating high-school senior or older. Must be fluent in Mandarin and English. Responsibilities include leading a group of 6-8 students in their daily routine and activities and helping out with whatever needed during the program. Must be responsible for the assignments. All room and board will be paid (excluding international airfare). Two half days (or One full day) off per week.

There will be two types of teachers: classroom instructors and live-in teachers. Chinese-speaking live-in teachers are responsible for students' day-to-day details and activities. Program counselors, who are bilingual graduating seniors or college students both from China and from the U.S., will organize and lead students' day-to-day activities. The ratio between live-in teachers/counselors and students will be 1:4 - 1:6.
